James Wyth Saylor, 67, of Ikes Fork, WV passed away May 20, 2012 in Charleston Area Medical Center
after a long illness. He was born July 28, 1944 in Accoville, WV, a son of the late Nancy Jane Brummette
and Radford Saylor. He was a retired coal miner and an Army Veteran. In addition to his parents he was
preceded in death by three brothers George Curtis Saylor, Radford Saylor, and Jerry Lee Saylor; two
sisters Betty Jean Goodman, and Nancy Carol Walker, and a grandson Mathew Walker. Those left to
cherish his memory are his loving wife Melody Saylor; three daughters Jamie Saylor (Marshall Reed) of
Ikes Fork, WV, Heather Vance (Mike Byrd) of Skin Fork, WV, and Jessica Smith (Mike Mathews) of Ikes
Fork, WV; two sons James Walker of Accorville, WV, and Radford (Kaitlyn) Smith of Keyrock, WV; a sister
Jeannette (Gene) Brummit of Virginia; seven grandchildren James Saylor and Nathanial Reed of Ikes Fork,
WV, Paige and Raylee Vance of Skin Fork, WV, Kandra Mathews of Ikes Fork, WV, Bentley Smith of
Keyrock, WV, and Corey Walker of Accoville, WV; two special friends Randy Cline of Ikes Fork, WV, and

Shelia Ann Carbaugh Daugherty, 45, of Kopperston, WV, went to heaven to be an angel with Nyrmal
on Tuesday May 22, 2012 at her home following a long illness. Shelia was born May 5, 1967 in Welch,
WV. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and daughter. Her daughter Nyrmal Ann Daugherty
preceded her in death along with two brothers Billy Odell Carbaugh and Gary Lee “Jack Rabbit”
Carbaugh; a sister Amanda Dawn Blankenship; maternal grandparents Elliott and Lena Rogers Carbaugh
and an uncle Eugene Carbaugh. Survivors include her loving husband Matthew “Matt” Daugherty; her
mother Dolly Carbaugh of Oceana, WV; three daughters Megan Daugherty of Beckley, Sarah Daugherty
and Marsha Daugherty both of Kopperston; three sons M.J. Daugherty of Kopperston, Timothy Sams, Jr.
of Oceana and Jacob Sams of Saulsville; three grandchildren Diego Mendoza, Amanda Daugherty and
Cynthia Daugherty; and another grandchild due to arrive in September of 2012; and a host of other loving

Harvey “Hoppy” Lawson, Jr., 59, of Pineville, WV passed away on Sunday May 27, 2012 at his home.
He was born February 14, 1953 in Tazewell, VA a son of the late Harvey and Elizabeth Baldwin Lawson,
Sr.. He was a licensed Minister. Also preceding him in death were two brothers Jerry and Frank Lawson.
Survivors include three sisters Carol Shumate of Glen Fork, Marie Lawson of Oceana and Darlene
Brayton of Florida; five brothers Kenneth Baldwin and Tommy Baldwin both of Bishop, VA, Alfred Lawson
and Johnny Lawson both of Pineville and William “Bill” Lawson of Oceana; A special niece Elizabeth
Cook; many nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM

Mary Jane Halsey Lambert, 72, of Sophia, WV formerly New Richmond, passed away on Friday June
15, 2011 at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, WV. She was born July 3, 1939 in Pineville, WV, a daughter
of the late Lacy and Eva Buchanan Halsey. Also preceding her in death were her husband Edward Preston
Lambert, a son Jerry Douglas Lambert, an infant daughter Rhonda Jane Lambert, a sister Jean Wallen,
and two brothers Alvin and Larry Halsey. She was a loving mother and wife. Survivors include a daughter

Nona M’Lane “Tiny” Altizer Thomas Whitten, 82, of Fanrock, WV passed away on Sunday June 17,
2012 in Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, WV. She was born October 21, 1929 in Fanrock, WV a
daughter of the late John and Virginia Christian Altizer. Tiny was a member of the Briar Creek Tabernacle
and a retired Postmaster for 33 years at Fanrock, WV. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her first husband Jake Thomas and two sisters Helen Lusk and M’Ledge Altizer. Those left to
cherish her memory include her husband of 27 years Rev. Ralph Whitten; three sons Leonard Thomas
and wife Barbara of Hampton, VA, Lloyd Thomas of Virginia Beach, VA and Rick Whitten and wife Joyce
of Hurricane, WV; two daughters Debbie Sheets and husband Ron of Hurricane, WV and Pati Schwake

28, 1966 in Welch, WV a son of the late Alda Robert and Hester Cline Hurley. He was a logger. In addition

Earl Glenn McGarvey, 74, of Mallory, WV went home to be with the Lord on Saturday June 23, 2012 at
his home following a long battle with cancer. He was born November 12, 1937 in Cleveland, OH a son of
the late Earl Glenn and Dorothy Clark McGarvey. Earl was a disabled Navy veteran and a retired
mechanic of the White Motor Truck Corp. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to
many. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a sister Maddie McGarvey and a
brother Wallace McGarvey. Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years Helen Marie McGarvey; four
daughters Shelia (Walter) Rakes of Davin, WV, Carol (Steve) Adkins of Cyclone, Sandy (Kenneth B.)

parents, a granddaughter Amber Nicole Sweeny also preceded her in death along with three brothers

home. She was born October 2, 1921 in Bud, WV, a daughter of the late Richard Lee and Martha Stanley
Green. Lenora was of the Baptist faith. Also preceding her in death was her loving husband of 45 years
Cecil Phelps, four brothers and a sister. Those left to mourn her passing include four children Ellen

Gary Thomas Snuffer, 66, of Kopperston, WV went to heaven to be with the Lord on Friday July 1, 2012
at Bowers Hospice House Beckley, WV. He was born May 8, 1946 in Glen Rogers, WV a son of the late
Albert and Virginia Phipps Snuffer. He was a loving husband and father. In addition to his parents he was
preceded in death by five siblings Carol Sue Bailey, Carlos Snuffer, Imogene Bailey, John Snuffer and an
infant Albert Lee Snuffer. Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years Barbara Jane Bailey Snuffer; two

Dee and Leah Lurlene Adkins Acord. Spunk was a former construction worker and a U.S. Army Veteran. In
addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers Aldie Charles Acord, Jimmy Dale
Acord and Dallas Steve Acord and his best friend Kenny “Slim” Dyke. Survivors include three sisters Joan

Nila Sue Lusk Berkhead, 71, of Fanrock, WV passed away on Thursday July 5, 2012 at Welch
Community Hospital. She was born June 24, 1941 in Fanrock, WV, a daughter of the late Rev. Raymond
and Helen Altizer Lusk. She was a life long member of the Briar Creek Tabernacle, retired from Sears, was
a former business owner and recently worked part time at Magic Mart. Sue was devoted to her church and
helping others. Also preceding her in death were her grandparents John and Jenny Altizer, two aunts Nona
“Tiny” Thomas Whitten and M’Ledge Altizer, a nephew Terry Short and a grandson Bryndon Wesley
Berkhead. Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 55 years James “Bob” Berkhead; a son
Wesley (Stephanie) Berkhead of Fanrock; three grandchildren Jeffery, Kyle and Katy Berkhead all of

Dallas Ray Owens, 69, of Oceana, WV went on to a better life on Sunday July 8, 2012 at Thomas
Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, WV. Dallas was born October 5, 1942 in Williamsburg, WV a son of
Stella Williams Owens and the late Everett Ray Owens. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, Life member of the
Disabled American Veterans, Brothers of The Wheel and a member of the Wyoming County Veterans

Angela Gail Varney, 19, of Lynco, WV, departed this life on Thursday August 9, 2012 in Raleigh General
Hospital, Beckley, WV from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born September 23,
1992 to parents Gayle and Norma Varney. She was their precious “Smiley Face” and “Angel”. She was the
light and love of her parents life. She was always smiling and full of joy. She had one dear sister, Elizabeth
Varney Gibson. She was a graduate of Westside High School and was attending Concord University
where she was excelling and majoring in English Literature. She was working with CU professor O’Haynes
on research on her favorite poet, Edgar Allen Poe, for publication. “The Conqueror Worm” was her favorite
poem and she also often quoted “The Raven”. She worked at GameStop in the Mercer Mall. She had
dozens of on-line friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially playing video games with
her favorite nephew Austin and she enjoyed spending time with her caring boyfriend, William Rookstool III.
She loved movies, games, comics and she went to the opening night showing of the new Batman movie on
her last date with Will. She was a band member for three years in middle school and all four years of high
school playing tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar, piano, tuba, and oboe.
Other things that she enjoyed were riding her four-wheeler and taking pictures of everything around her. In
years past she faithfully attended Clear Fork Valley Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ at
VBS. She was a light in the lives of the many people who loved her and she will be greatly missed.
Preceding her in death were her paternal grandparents Ballard and Alline Varney; uncles Freddy Sellards,
Bobby Varney, and Randy Varney; aunts Patsy Vint and Lula Belle Varney. Those left to cherish her

Creek then moved to Lynco where she started her family. Then later she moved to Mullens. Her family was
what made her the happiest, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren, fishing and playing cards. She was of the Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her
parents and three children Johnny Ray Carper, Charlene Carper, and Roger Dale Carper; sisters Sheila
Bishop, Patricia Walker; and a brother Vencil Harper. She will be greatly missed by her companion of 34

Dreama Kay Brooks Toler, 54, of Long Branch, WV went home to be with the Lord on Monday August
20, 2012 at her home. She was born July 10, 1958 in Iaeger, WV a daughter of the late Rev. Charles Ray
and Edna Kennedy Brooks. Dreama was a loving wife, a cherished mother and a devoted grandmother.
She was a devoted member of the Long Branch Freewill Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the

Wilfred Wesley Perry, 52, of Cyclone, WV, passed away on Thursday August 30, 2012 at St. Mary’s
Medical Center, Huntington, WV. He was born August 26, 1960 in Mullens, WV a son of Billy Ray and
Bobbie Carter Perry. He was a 1978 graduate of Oceana High School, where he was a member of the
Baseball team. Will enjoyed playing video games, listening to gospel music, watching the Yankees and
Braves with his dad, playing with his nephews Josh, Coleton, Andrew and Jackson and playing cards wih
his special Aunt Darlene Perry. When able, Will attended th Cyclone Missionary Baptist Church. Will was
preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Marshall Hayes and Inez Christian Perry; maternal
grandparents Garland Bud and Stella Brinegar Carter; uncles Buddy, Sherwood and Von Perry, Roy,
Buddy and Roger Carter; aunt Helen Workman. In addition to his parents he is survived by his paternal

Ronald Lee Cook, 88, of Gloucester, VA formerly of Oceana, passed away on Wednesday September
26, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born May 5, 1924 in Oceana, WV a son of the late
John Homer and Sadie Elizabeth Cook. He graduated from Oceana High School in May of 1942 and
joined the Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Sergeant, having served Solomon Islands and also the
Treasury Island-Bougainville operations. Following his discharge in 1945 he attended West Virginia
University from 1945-1949 majoring in history. He served as principal at Oceana High School and in 1949
he became supervisor for the Wyoming County Board of Education, a position that he held until 1984.
When the Korean War broke out, he entered the US Army as a company commander and rose to the rank
of Captain and saw action during Pork Chop Hill. Ronald was a member of Bellamy United Methodist
Church in Gloucester and sang in the choir. He was a charter member of the Middle Peninsula Detachment
#1317 of the Marine Corps League. He was also preceded in death by his brother John Willard Cook who
died during W.W. II. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Ann Claypool Cook; his two
daughters Virginia Lynn Ellis and Colleen Morgan; five grandchildren Jennifer Knowles, Jason Knowles,
Devon Rowan, Lauren Rowan, and Josh Rowan; and two great grandchildren, and a host of other loving
family and friends. The family will receive friends at Bellamy United Methodist Church, Goucester, VA

Hazel Thomas Jarrell. She attended the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church since June 10,1949, she was a
Sunday school teacher for 40 some years, food chairman for many years, and a member of the Eastern
Star Chapter 110 Pineville, WV. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her parents
she is preceded in death by husband of 56 years William Hurley Brown; a brother Charley Jarrell; a sister

Tessie Kathleen “Tennessee” Rife, 82, of Oceana, WV went home to be with the Lord Wednesday
November 28, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 20, 1930 in
Buchanan County, VA a daughter of the late John and Polly Mullins Rife. She attended the Oceana
Freewill Baptist Church for over 60 years, and was an inspiration and Godly example to all who knew her.
She touched many people singing the praises of God and will be greatly missed. In addition to her
parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Thurmond Rife; her step father Martin
Whitt; a brother Cletus Rife; five sisters Bonnie Sue Rife, Brenda McMillan, Retha Walker, Judy
Blankenship, and Shelby Coleman; two son in laws Danny Belcher, and Troy Cole. Survivors include four

mother of the church. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The last four years of
her life she stayed with her son and daughter because of her health. She was preceded in death by her
loving husband of 48 years Alvin Edward Thomas; her parents; a brother Norman Rose; two sisters Janice

son of the late James D. and Lurlene Adkins Acord. James was an Oceana High School graduate. He
was a US Army Veteran having served in Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart, the Army
Commendation Medal and the Air Medal. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four
brothers Aldie Charles Acord, Jimmy Dale Acord, Dallas Steve Acord, and Stanley Dee Acord. Those left

Rev. Mary Margie Morgan Hatfield, 77, of Pemberton, WV, Our precious angel went home to be with the
Lord on Sunday January 13, 2013 at her home following a long illness. She was born November 2, 1935 in
Guyan, WV to the late William Connie and Ada Jane Yates Morgan. Mary was an ordained minister
through the United Christian Ministerial Association. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death
by a son in law Herman West. Those left to cherish her are her loving husband of 61 years and 10 months
French Hatfield; three sons Irving (Sandi) Hatfield, Joseph (Debbie) Hatfield, and Tony (Sandy) Hatfield;
four daughters Sharon (Jimmy) Sadler, Karen (Mark) Stiefer, Beth West, Melissa White and companion
Jackie Miller; a special grandson Mickey Udy who resides at the home and was greatly involved with her

Randall K. “Randy” Stafford, 53, of Oceana, WV, passed away on Friday January 25, 2013 at his
home from a battle with cancer. He was born January 28, 1959 in Man, WV, a son of Kenneth Jacob
Stafford of Kopperston and the late Erma Lillian Arthur Stafford. Randy loved to ride his Goldwing
motorcycle with his wife Sue. They had traveled to 39 of 50 States in the United States touring the
country. He was a member of the Toneda Baptist Church and the UMWA. He enjoyed camping, fishing
and hunting with two sons Patrick and Jared. Randy enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter
Jasmine, usually bicycling and fishing. He also volunteered in the past church youth groups and Sunday
school programs, civic organizations such as Oceana Little League, Biddy Buddy Basketball, and the
Boy Scouts. He was formerly employed with Arch Coal Inc., Mingo Logan Coal Co., Transervice Inc.,
Harris #2 Mine, and Itmann Coal Co. He was preceded in death by his mother. In addition to his father
Kenneth Jacob Stafford of Kopperston, he is survived by his wife of 33 years Sue Stafford of Oceana,
their two sons Patrick Stafford of Welch; and Jared Stafford and wife Kat of Beckley; one grandchild
Jasmine Stafford of Mullens; three sisters Lillian Tilley and husband Billy of Eccles, Marsha Sparks and

Clarence Lee “Buck” Gibson, 91, of Christiansburg, VA, formerly of Lynco, WV passed away on

Levi Martin Gibson and the late Alpha Mae Brown Gibson Albright. He worked for Eastern Associated
Coal Corporation for 35 years and was a member of the UMWA local 7604. In addition to his parents he

Dempsey “Demp” Walls, 85, of Clear Fork, WV, passed away on Wednesday February 6, 2013 in
Welch Community Hospital, Welch, WV. He was born November 25, 1927, in Wyoming County, WV, a son
of the late Phillip Sheridan and Thelma Ivy Farrell Walls. In addition to his parents he was preceded in
death by three sisters Ruth, Naomi and Minnie Pearl and a brother Jack. He was a good hearted old coal
miner that loved getting up in the morning for a good cup of coffee. Then immediately getting into his car to
go for a ride. He would stop and see friends and brag about his tomatoes and could then go pick a four
leaf clover. At the age of 85 he had quite a ride and everyone knew him. He loved little kids, dogs and
cats. He loved Jesus and we’re sure he loves seeing him now. We love you and will see you soon, so we
can go for a ride and listen to Allen Jackson. Survivors include a brother Mickey Walls of Clear Fork; a
nephew Mickey (Kathy) Sutter of San Angelo, TX; a great niece Sarah Sutters of San Angelo, TX; and a

Francis Elaine Birchfield, 60, of Shannon Mill Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday

Walter Delphas and Lida Katherine Blankenship Birchfield. Francis was a very strong and beautiful lady
who could do most anything. She attended the Brenton Church of God. She loved her grandchildren, her
horses, and everyone of the children that rode her bus. Elaine enjoyed the outdoors and loved to do oil
paintings. She was a Wyoming County Board of Education school bus driver for 5 years. In addition to her

James Lee Pelphrey, 80, of Holiday, FL, formerly of Oceana, departed his earthly life and boarded the
heavenly train on Saturday March 23, 2013 at his daughters home. He was born October 24, 1932 in
Lovely, KY, a son of the late Sherman and Emma Pelphrey. James had a deep passion for trains and
enjoyed collecting and displaying model trains. He enjoyed bluegrass music and was an avid dancer. He
had a great love for fishing and spent many hours on the banks of rivers, lakes and by the shores of the
ocean near his home in Holiday, Florida. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a
grandson Craig Pelphrey, son-in-law Larry Lester anda brother Johnny Pelphrey. He was a retired coal
miner having worked for 27 years at Eastern Associated Coal’s Kopperston Mine. James is survived by

Carrol Justus, Jr., 61, of Oceana, WV passed away on May 15, 2013 at his home, Kopperston, WV. He
was born January 24, 1952 in Baileysville, WV a son of the late Carrol and Lettie Blankenship Justus, Jr. In
addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters Creith Lane, and Truebee McGraw; a
brother Harless Justus; and a stepdaughter Lisa Blackburn. He was a truck driver. Survivors include two
sons Dwight Justus of Kopperston, and Cody Justus of Kopperston; a stepdaughter Brenda Reed of
Pineville; step-granddaughter Jamie Short, Kayla Ritchie and Brittany Ritchie all of Oceana; a step great

Hospital, Bristol, TN. She was born November 27, 1975 in Welch, WV a daughter of the late Judy Edwards
Justice and Donnie Justice of Tazewell, VA. She was a homemaker. Also preceding her in death was
paternal grandparents Walter and Pearlie Justice and maternal grandfather Allen Edwards. Survivors
include her father Donnie Justus and companion Jane Boothe of Tazewell; her long time companion Rex
Horne; four sisters Barbara Ann (James) Counts of Bluefield, Michelle (Jason) Phipps of Hinton, Jennifer
(Kevin) Grahamn of Mullens and Brittany Justice of Beckley; three brothers Brett Justice of Tazewell, Jason
(Amy) Justice of Hinton and Benny (Marie) Justice of Tazewell; and Ronald Justice who was as close as a

William Gayther and Nora Beatrice Mullins Johnson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death
by two daughters Tina Johnson and Cynthia Pennington; two brothers Gayther Arvus Johnson and Johnny
Johnson and a sister Nancy Havert. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years Brenda Pricilla Vint
Johnson; a daughter Lisa Dawn White and husband William of Oceana; two sisters Erdene Hiller of
Colonial Beach, VA and Deborah “Debbie” Wilson of Richmond, VA; two brothers Bill Johnson and wife
