“She was the heart of our family tree; the roots that kept us grounded, the branches that sheltered us, and the love that continues to bloom through every generation.” Betty J. Smith, 85, of Jesse, WV, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness, surrounded by the lover of her family. Born and raised at Hurricane Branch in Jesse, Betty spent her entire life in the community she loved. She was a woman of quiet strength, humility, and kindness whose gentle spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Betty was married to the love of her life, Arville Smith, for 57 wonderful years before his passing. Together they built a life centered around faith, family, and love. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Crockett and Goldie Acord Bailey, her beloved son, Mike Smith; her grandson, Adam Mullens; and all of her brothers and sisters, making Betty the last surviving member of her generation. To everyone who knew her, Betty was simply known as “Nanny.” It was a title she wore proudly and one that reflected the love and care she gave so feely. Nanny never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel welcome. She was known for her collection of roosters, filling her kitchen and dining room with rooster decorations that became one of her trademarks. Family and friends often smiled at the sight of her cherished collection, knowing it reflected her unique personality and the warmth of her home. Nanny’s love, laughter, and gentle spirit will forever leave a lasting impression on all who knew her. While she will be deeply missed, her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends for generations. Left to cherish her memory include her loving daughter, Tammie (Randall) Smith; her five grandchildren: Leslie (Mark), Travis (Shannan), Desirea (Eric), Kyle (Miranda), and Roncheski (Jason). She was also the proud great grandma of fifteen grandchildren: Mackenzie (Isaac), Makyleigh (Hunter), Ella (Clay), Olivia, Grayson, Kruize, Paizleigh, Waylon, Navi, Nash, Zola, Zadei, Kyran, Zaya, and Zavannah. Betty was also blessed with five great-great-grandchildren: Wrenley, Ryland, Holdyn, Amelia, and Magnolia. In addition, she leaves behind an extra great-grandson whom she loved dearly from the day he was born, Colby Brooks, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish the memories they shared with her. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 17th in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV with Rev. Ernest Francis, and Rev. Jeff Greene officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Cook Cemetery, Jesse, WV. Friends may gather with the family from 12:00 pm until time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who called, visited, brought food, sent messages, or offered prayers during Betty’s illness and passing. A special thank you is extended to the Hospice nurses and staff whose kindness, compassion, and gentle care brought comfort to Betty and her family during this difficult time. The family is being served by the Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV.
