Buford “Butch” Daugherty, 72, of North Spring, West Virginia, passed away on November 4, 2026, at Logan Regional Medical Center. Born October 3, 1954, in Williamson, West Virginia, he was the son of Buford Daugherty and Mary Vanover Daugherty Chapman. Butch was a lifelong resident of North Spring, where he and his wife, Iva Dean, raised their family. A disabled coal miner and proud member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), Butch was a true jack of all trades. His natural talents extended from carpentry and electrical work to mechanics, his greatest passion. He had an imagination that saw possibilities where others saw limitations. Whether working on a car, Jeep, side-by-side, motorcycle, or piece of heavy equipment, Butch enjoyed the challenge of making something work better than before. He could build an engine with enough power and a sound that turned heads, or fabricate a solution from whatever parts he had on hand, sometimes simply to prove it could be done. When someone in the community had car trouble, they knew Butch was the man to see, and he was glad to help get them back on the road. Butch also loved his Harley-Davidson and riding alongside friends who shared his enthusiasm for the open road. He and Ivy especially enjoyed the dirt-track racing days, watching their son race a car Butch had built. They shared 53 years of marriage before her passing just weeks before his own. Though Butch wasn’t a man of many tender words, he took pride in the things he created and lived life very much on his own terms. Those who knew him will remember his strong opinions, his determination to do things his way, and the unmistakable sound of an engine he had brought to life. He was preceded in death most recently by his loving wife, Iva Dean Daugherty; his parents, Buford Daugherty and Mary Daugherty Chapman; his stepfather, Dale Chapman; and several close friends and brothers-in-law who were like family to him. He is survived by his son, Adam (Jamie) Daugherty; daughter, Victoria Daugherty Christian; grandchildren, Jacob Daugherty (Taylor), Lilly Rasmussen, Wyatt Reagan, and Damian Christian; and sisters, Wanda Browning, Sharron Daugherty, Rita Ward, Terrie Holmes, and Stephanie Chapman Taylor; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other family members, and friends. In accordance with Butch’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A graveside committal will take place on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 12:00 noon at the Daugherty Family Cemetery in North Spring, West Virginia. Butch will be carried to his final resting place by family and friends. The family is being served by the Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV.
