Janet Hope Short Spears, 78, of Matheny, WV, went home to be with the Lord on October 25, 2026 at Wyoming Healthcare Center in New Richmond, WV. She was born on September 14, 1948 in Baileysville, WV a daughter of the late Verlin and Flora Belle Foster Short . She worked for 20 years at Goodson’s Supermarket then retired to enjoy life with her children and grandchildren. She fought many battles with cancer and wore her scars like a warrior. Even on the hardest days her strength and faith shined bigger than the pain. She was a devoted follower of Christ and a faithful servant of the Lord. Courageous, strong, kind, loving, and selfless are the words that come to mind when describing her character knowing her was to love her. There aren’t enough words to capture what she truly meant to us. She had an incredible gift of making people feel loved. Heaven gained a beautiful angel, but down here the missing you will never end. Deep in our hearts we will love and cherish her life, but she will never be forgotten. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her five siblings; sister Verlene (Bill) Bradford, sister Elizabeth (Freddie) Daniels, brother Larry (Dixie) Short, and brother Burns (Imogene) Short; her son Anthony Lee Spears; and her grandson Nathan Shaqwn Ameling. Those left to cherish her memories are her two daughters; Lorrie Ann Watson and her husband Gene Watrson of Spring Hope, NC, and Janet Elizabeth Walls and her husband Ron Walls of Crany; two granddaughters LeeAnn Hope Walls of Crany, and Madelyn Piper Spears of Oceana; two great grandchildren Barrett Ray and Maggie Mae Short; and a host of other loving family and friends. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 28th in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV with Pastor Herman Cook officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV. Friends may gather with the family from 11:30 am until time of service on Wednesday at the church. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Wyoming Healthcare Center and their extraordinary staff for taking such good care of her, most importantly, for treating her like family.
